History of Weissenstein Castle

The Counts of Schönborn were passionate collectors and great lovers of beauty, and this can still be seen today in the architecture, the interior and the items on display in Weissenstein Castle, which have been spared the ravages of war and plunder for over three centuries.

The private picture collection contains works by Rubens, Titian and Van Dyck, amongst others, and creates a completely harmonious baroque entity with the ceiling frescoes and trompe l'oeil architectural paintings. The Sala Terrena, or Grotto Room, contains a wealth of imaginative detail and provides visitors with a pleasantly cool respite on hot summer days...

Today, our castle is still full of life. Each year, in the summer, young, talented musicians from all over the world meet in the Collegium Musicum to make music under the baton of highly respected conductors and to present their work to the public. The Collegium Musicum closes with a grand fireworks concert each year.
